You can format text in assessment questions - in both offline (paper) and online assessments - using simple formatting codes. This allows you to add bold, italics and underline to make questions clearer and easier for students to read.
- To bold a word / sentence add ** either side, e.g. "This word is **bold**", would present in the UI as "This word is bold".
- To use italics add _ either side, e.g. "I like to _highlight part of a sentence by using italics_", would present in the UI as "I like to highlight part of a sentence by using italics".
- To underline a word or words, use ~~ either side, e.g. "This ~~part of the sentence~~ is underlined", would present in the UI as "This part of the sentence is underlined".
Please note: Text formatting can only be used in questions, not in answers.
Using different alphabets and special characters
If your assessment includes accents, symbols or characters from different alphabets, such as French, German, Greek or Cyrillic characters, make sure your CSV file is saved using UTF-8 encoding.
If you're using Excel, select CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) when saving or exporting your file.
You can find and copy special characters and symbols using a Unicode character website, such as Symbl.cc.
Preparing your CSV for upload
Once you've completed all the required information, save your spreadsheet as a CSV file ready for upload.
Important: If your spreadsheet contains special characters, accents or characters from different alphabets, always save it as a CSV UTF-8 file to help ensure the characters display correctly in Smartgrade.
