Assessments can be built with 1+ part online and 1+ part offline either via spreadsheet upload or within Smartgrade itself.
Building a combined online/offline assessment via spreadsheet upload
In the same spreadsheet upload you can create both your online and offline part(s). You must use the online spreadsheet template which can be found at the bottom of this article.
The system will detect which parts are online and which are offline by what level of detail is included in each part:
- Your online part(s) must include answer detail, such as correct answer(s) and wrong answer(s) depending on if it's a free text or multiple choice question. Further guidance on the principles of creating online assessments via spreadsheet is here.
- Your offline part(s) must not include answer detail, but must instead include all details prior to answer detail such as Marks, Topics, Question text etc. Further guidance on the principles of creating offline assessments via spreadsheet is here.
The screenshot below shows Part 1 as an online part, with the necessary answer detail highlighted in the red box. Part 2 will be offline as it does not include these details.
Go to My Assessments > BUILD ASSESSMENT and select/input all the details of your assessment as normal (family, window, year group etc) - further guidance here. For combined assessments:
- Ensure you have 2+ parts selected in the 'Multiple parts?' section
- Ensure that 'Upload question detail?' and 'Online assessment?' are switched on
Once you've clicked BROWSE FILES and uploaded your assessment, in the Question Detail you should then see that your online part(s) have the 'Online part? switch on by default, and that your offline part(s) do not:
Building a combined online/offline assessment within Smartgrade
The same principles as above apply in terms of the detail required for online vs offline. If you wanted to input your assessment detail directly into Smartgrade rather than upload via spreadsheet, do not switch on 'Upload question detail?' and then use the 'Online part?' switch as shown above to differentiate your parts when in the question detail EDIT area.
Administering combined online/offline assessment
If in My Assessments or in Marketplace, a user views a combined assessment, they will see it says MIXED in the 'Online assessment' field:
When someone looks at question detail of a combined assessment, either in My Assessments or Marketplace, they will see what type each part is next to where they toggle between parts:
In Markbooks, a combined online/offline assessment will have a different actions menu via the three dots:
- When you click View/Edit, you will be able to input data into the markbook of the offline part(s) only
- When you Start/End test or Copy link, you will only be able to do so for the online part(s)
- When you Mark test or Automark (if the online part(s) were 1-mark MCQ only) this will only apply to the online part(s)
In Analysis you will also have Distractor-level Analysis available if your online part(s) included MCQ questions.
