This help article is for teachers who are carrying out online assessments with their class. A few quick steps need to be completed prior to running the assessment. A video covering these steps is also available here.
Assign assessments to classes
Assigning assessments to classes is carried out by a person with Smartgrade Admin permissions in your school or trust. This help article will take them through this process.
Once the classes are assigned, markbooks for the assessments will be available in the Markbooks page.
Unlock the markbook
Markbooks need to be unlocked to enable students to take the test. After the assessment has finished the markbook should be locked to prevent students submitting any further responses and so that auto-marking can occur. In the Markbooks page locked markbooks will be displayed with a padlock, and where all parts of an assessment are locked, these will be coloured yellow.
To unlock a markbook:
- Navigate to the Markbooks page.
- Ensure that the View is set to Class Group.
- Search for the relevant assessment and click Start test in the Actions column.
- If the assessment has more than one part you will be asked which part you want to start. Use the slider to select which part or parts you want to start.
Share the assessment link with your pupils
- Navigate to the Markbooks page.
- Ensure that the View is set to Class Group.
- Search for the relevant assessment and click Copy Link in the Actions column.
- If the assessment has more than one part, you will be able to select which link to copy.
- Send the link to your pupils.
Note: If a student logs in using the regular Smartgrade URL: https://app.smartgrade.co.uk/, then links to all open tests will be available:
Logging in to the assessment
- When students click on the test link it will take them to a log on screen. Note: to ensure the student logs in to the right account please ensure no user is already logged in to Smartgrade on the device, or use an incognito window to access the test.
- The student should click Sign in with Microsoft or Sign in with Google, as appropriate, and follow the steps to log in with their usual school email address and password.
- A welcome screen will appear.
Completing the test
Explain to the students that the questions may require different kinds of answers:
-
Some questions may require free text answers, to be typed in the given boxes. For questions requiring more than one answer, boxes are labeled A, B, or C.
-
Some questions may have multiple choice options. To select an answer, they just need to click that option (or options), and can unselect an option by clicking on it again.
When the student is ready, ask them to click Start Test.
The students can navigate through the test in various ways; they can use the Next and Back buttons, the number line towards the top of the screen, or they use the Review and Submit button, where they can see their answers to the questions, and clicking Edit on a specific question will return them to that part of the test.
The student can see how many questions they have completed and percentage progress towards the top left-hand side of their screen.
Reviewing and submitting the test
At any point students can review their answers by clicking on Review and Submit. They will see their answers, questions which have not been attempted will be greyed out. They can return to complete or change their answer by clicking Edit.
If a student has finished their assessment they should click Review and Submit. Towards the top right of the screen they then click SUBMIT.
Locking the assessment
Once the students have completed their test the assessment needs to be locked to prevent anyone submitting new answers and to allow auto-marking to occur.
In the My Markbooks page click on the three dots in the action column and select End test
