When students sit online assessments Smartgrade will auto-mark wherever possible (e.g. where there is a multiple choice question or an exact match to a free text answer), but some questions will need to be marked by a teacher. The exception to this is if the test only contains 1 mark multiple choice questions, in which case Smartgrade will automark the entire test.
Note: Whenever a test is being marked the assessment will be locked, meaning that no further edits can be made by students unless the teacher exits marking and unlocks it again.
To mark an online assessment
- Go to the Markbooks module and find the assessment you wish to mark.
- Click on the 3 dots in the Actions column and select Mark Test
- If the assessment isn't already locked, a warning will appear to let you know that the test will be locked. Click YES, BEGIN MARKING. Note: If the test has multiple parts you will be asked to select which part of the test you wish to mark before the warning appears. The test can be unlocked after marking to allow other students to complete the test.
- The marking screen will open at the first question. The question name, question type, any marking guidance and the answer(s) will appear at the top of the screen, and the students names sitting the test will be listed underneath with their answers.
- The questions can be navigated through using the NEXT and BACK buttons.
- If a student was absent for the test, put a tick in the box to the left of their name, no marks will be expected for that student.
- Smartgrade intelligently marks as many questions as it can. You will see the following behaviours:
- Single answer multiple choice questions will be auto-marked (marks can be seen towards the right).
- Multiple answer multiple choice questions will be auto-marked if all options are correctly chosen or no options are correctly chosen, but any partial marks will need to be given by the teacher.
- Single answer free text questions will be auto-marked where the student's response matches the correct answer exactly. In that situation Smartgrade will give the answer a green tick and will give it full marks. If the student does not attempt an answer, Smartgrade will also automark the question by giving the answer a red cross and applying zero marks.
- Multiple answer free text questions will be auto-marked where the student's responses match the correct answers exactly and in the given order. In this situation Smartgrade will give the answers a green tick and will give full marks. If the student does not attempt an answer, Smartgrade will also automark the question by giving the answers a red cross and applying zero marks. Where a student has given answers that are not an exact match, a question mark will appear by the student's responses and the question must be marked by the teacher by clicking on the appropriate mark on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Where a teacher has marked a question as partially correct, neither giving maximum marks nor zero marks, this is indicated by an orange triangle next to the student's response.
- Where questions have been automarked, the teacher can overwrite these if necessary by clicking on the preferred mark.
- If you only want to see questions that still need marking, use the SHOW ONLY UNMARKED ANSWERS slider just above the MARK column. When you click BACK and NEXT only questions that still need teacher marking will be displayed, along with the final question, as this is where the SUBMIT button is located.
- You can SAVE AND EXIT at any time during marking by using the button towards the bottom of the screen.
- When all marking is complete, click the SUBMIT button found on the last question. If any questions have been left unmarked you will see a warning letting you know that the marking is incomplete. You will also get a warning if you are trying to submit a multi-part assessment if all parts have not been marked.
- Once you have submitted your marking you will be taken to the Analysis page. To find out more about our analysis please see this help article.
- If a student who was absent needs to now sit the assessment, you need to Unlock the assessment in the Markbooks tab using the Actions column. You then need to Start test. Once the student has taken the assessment, you then need to 'End test', and then 'Mark quiz' for their answers to be marked as per the above steps.
Marking a one-mark-only multiple choice assessment
- Go to the Markbooks module and find the assessment you wish to mark.
- Click on the 3 dots in the Actions column and select Automark.
- The assessment analysis screen will open. Smartgrade will have marked the test and any students who have not entered at least one answer will be marked as absent.
- If you have a student who was marked as absent who subsequently needs to sit the test, simply unlock the assessment in the My Markbooks page to enable them to take it. Once they have completed the test you will need to click Automark for Smartgrade to mark the assessment again.
