When assessments are set up by publishers, there are three choices they can make when it comes to data entry:
- Question level data entry only
- Question level or part level data entry
- Question level, part level or test level data entry
This article describes how to enter marks as part totals or test totals. For information on how to enter marks into a standard question level markbook, view this article on standard markbooks.
- Check your markbook is enabled for total or part total data entry. Depending on which of the three options above your publisher has chosen, markbooks that allow this will have one of the below sliders that will allow you to switch between total data entry or question level data entry.
-
Choose which mode to use. There are various options available to you depending on how the markbook is set up:
- Part level data entry only. This will show the part Part Total column and the Test Total column, but you will only be able to enter marks as a Part Total - the Test Total is read only.
- Total or part total data entry only. This will only show the Test Total and Part Total columns and you will only be able to enter a total mark for the whole assessment or the part. Note you cannot enter a part total and a test total for the same student.
- Question, part or total data entry. This will give you the option to enter question level marks for some students, part level marks for others and total marks for yet others.
-
Fill in the marks.
- In Part level data entry mode, you enter your marks into the part total column as in the case of the below screenshot.
- In Total or part total data entry mode, you enter your total marks into the test total column or part total column as in the below screenshot.
- In Question, part or total data entry mode, you can enter some marks at question level (as has been done for Hester Bartoletti in the below example), some at part level (as with Cassandra Bartholomew) and others at the whole mark level (as is the case for Felipa Bauch in the below example).
Tips and tricks
- As with all markbooks, copy and paste is enabled, so you can use this to enter marks from a spreadsheet, or to copy-paste between cells.
- If you enter a question level mark into a row that already contains a manually entered total mark then the total will be deleted and replaced with a calculated total based on the question level marks.
-
If you attempt to enter a part total or test total mark in a row that already contains question level data, you'll see a warning modal allowing you to cancel the total mark data entry (see below). If you choose to proceed, the question level data will be lost and cannot be recovered.
