Steps to carry out before running the assessment
Before administering an online assessment for the first time, an administrator in your school will need to complete some preliminary steps by following this article.
Markbooks will need to be assigned in the Marketplace by a School or MAT Admin. Markbooks set up for AI marking can be identified by the Powermark icon in the AI column on the Markbooks table.
Unlocking the test
Teachers will unlock markbooks ready for students to sit their test by clicking "Start test", or "End/Start test" for a multi-part assessment, where you can select which part you are going to make available to students.
How students access the test
There are two ways a student can access their tests in Smartgrade:
Option 1
Once the assessment has been 'started', click "Copy link" in the Actions menu to copy the URL to share with the pupils.
If the assessment has more than one part, you will be able to select which link to copy.
When students click on the link a login page will appear. They will need to use their Microsoft or Google credentials to log in.
Once logged in students will then see the welcome screen of the test they are taking:
Option 2
You can share the regular Smartgrade URL: https://app.smartgrade.co.uk/. Students will need to use their Microsoft or Google credentials to log in.
Once logged in, a page will display all open tests available to the student.
The student interface
Explain to the students that the questions may require different kinds of questions:
- Some questions may require free text answers, to be typed in the given boxes. For questions requiring more than one answer, boxes are labelled A, B, or C.
- Some questions may have multiple choice options. To select an answer, students just need to click that option (or options), and can unselect an option by clicking on it again.
- Some questions may require the student to enter their answer into a box (or boxes) within the body of the question text.
- Some questions may make use of a maths keyboard which will be seen above the answer box (or boxes).
When the student is ready, ask them to click Start Test.
The students can navigate through the test in various ways; they can use the Next and Back buttons, the number line towards the top of the screen, or they use the Review and Submit button, where they can see their answers to the questions, and clicking Edit on a specific question will return them to that part of the test.
The student can see how many questions they have completed and percentage progress towards the top left-hand side of their screen.
Reviewing and submitting the test
At any point students can review their answers by clicking on Review and Submit. They will see their answers, questions which have not been attempted will be greyed out. They can return to complete or change their answer by clicking Edit.
If a student has finished their assessment they should click Review and Submit. Towards the top right of the screen they then click SUBMIT.
Ending the test
Once students have submitted their answers, the teacher should click "End test" to send the answers to our Powermark AI assistant.
For a multi-part assessment, select "End/Start test" and use the slider to end the specific part that has been sat by students which will send the answers to our Powermark AI assistant.
Moderating the marks and submitting the markbook
Once Powermark, our AI marking assistant, has completed the marking and the data has been verified (this will take around ten minutes), teachers can moderate the marks by going to the markbook and clicking "Review AI marking". For a multi-part assessment you will be able to select which part you would like to review marks for.
If Powermark has not yet completed marking you will see the following message. We recommend trying again in a few minutes.
The Teacher Marking screen will open and will display a message saying that the markbook has been marked by Powermark.
You will then see all student answers and the marks given by Powermark. Where there is less confidence in a mark, Smartgrade will list these responses in a separate table at the top of the marking screen. We recommend giving particular attention to these.
Marks can be adjusted for any answers as required.
Once you are happy with all marks awarded, you will then need to submit the markbook using the "SUBMIT" button found on the last question.
What about absent students?
Teachers can restart the test when the student returns by clicking "Start test". The student will then take the test and submit their answers. The teacher can then "End test" to send any new answers to Powermark. Once our AI assistant has completed the marking, the teacher will then be able to go back into "Review AI marking" and review marks for these answers.
Do not forget to submit the marking once it has been reviewed.
